ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS IDENTIFICATION TEST (AUDIT)

The AUDIT is a 10 item questionnaire that assesses an individual's alcohol use. It includes questions as to quantity and frequency of alcohol use, binge drinking, symptoms of dependence, and alcohol-related problems. It is well known for identifying people who have alcohol related problems but for whom alcohol dependence does not apply. It has also been found to be useful across multiple cultural groups and in identifying alcohol use problems among men and women.

The ASSIST is an 8-item questionnaire developed to assess use of 10 different categories of substances. It is can be used to provide an indication of the level of risk associated with the client’s substance use, and whether use is hazardous and likely to be causing harm(now or in the future) if use continues.

BARRIERS TO ACCESSING CARE (BACE) – MOV

The BACE is a 30-item instrument that measures barriers to mental health care and seeks information on approximately 30 barriers to care with an emphasis on stigma specific barriers. In addition, it includes a treatment stigma subscale in order to understand the extent to which stigma associated with mental health services precludes an individual from getting care.

GUIDE FOR USING THE DRUG ABUSE SCREENING TEST (DAST)

The Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) was designed to provide a brief, self-report instrument for population screening, clinical case finding and treatment evaluation research. The DAST yields a quantitative index of the degree of consequences related to drug abuse. This instrument takes approximately 5 minutes to administer and may be given in either a self-report or interview format. The DAST may be used in a variety of settings to provide a quick index of drug abuse problems.

A RAPID SCREENING TOOL FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS IN CHILDREN 3–6YEARS OLD: RESULTS OF A VALIDATION STUDY

The mental health needs of young children in humanitarian contexts often remain unaddressed. The lack of a validated, rapid and simple tool for screening combined with few mental health professionals able to accurately diagnose and provide appropriate care mean that young children remain without care. Here, we present the results of the principle cross-cultural validation of the “Psychological Screening for Young Children aged 3 to 6” (PSYCAa3-6). The PSYCa 3–6 is a simple scale for children 3 to 6 years old administered by non-specialists, to screen young children in crises and thereby refer them to care if needed.

A SCREENING TOOL FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL DIFFICULTIES IN CHILDREN AGED 6 TO 36 MONTHS: CROSS-CULTURAL VALIDATION IN KENYA, CAMBODIA AND UGANDA

In low-resource settings, the lack of mental health professionals and cross-culturally validated screening instruments complicates mental health care delivery. This is especially the case for very young children. This tool aims to develop and cross-culturally validate a simple and rapid tool, the PSYCa 6–36, that can be administered by non-professionals to screen for psychological difficulties among children aged six to 36 months.

The 25-item Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a brief behavioural screening questionnaire about persons 2-17 years old. It exists in several versions to meet varying needs. These 25 items are divided between 5 scales: emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity/ inattention, peer relationship problems, and prosocial behavior. PSYCHOSOCIAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT IN EMERGENCY DISPLACEMENT, EARLY RECOVERY, AND RETURN: IOM TOOLS

The tools presented in this volume have been developed and used over the past few years in order to identify and respond to people’s psychosocial needs in the midst of an emergency and in early recovery settings, mainly targeting displaced and returnee populations. As tools for IOM operations, they are designed to achieve four main goals: 1) assessing people’s psychosocial well-being in a family setting in a participatory way 2) mapping the provision of pre-existing and emergency tailored services and capacities to respond to the needs of the affected population; 3) identify most urgent areas of intervention and 4) accordingly planning interventions aimed at addressing the needs that are not covered by existing services, in the thematic areas where the intervention is most needed.

Lifeline activities ask individuals or group members to create a lifeline of important events and discuss the impact of MHPSS actions Lifeline activity discussions may also focus on how individuals overcame similar adversity in the past when reviewing events (e.g., communities with frequent/ cyclical natural disasters or facing climate change or conflict)

The measure is an interview facilitated to a caregiver/ parent. A trained interviewer reads each item one by one. For each item, the caregiver/parent is asked to respond either “no or not at all”, “sometimes or occasionally”, “often or frequently”. The interviewer rates each item (0, 1 or 2) accordingly and, at the end of administration, computes a total score ranging from zero to 40.
